“Student’s Work is Melbourne Bound”
Determined to build her resume, local Toowoomba SQIT visual art student, Janelle Yeomans, recently applied for entry into the themed 2011 Rob McNamara Exhibition, ‘There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’ (Leornard Cohen). She made a sculpture specifically for the exhibition, in the hope that it would be selected to be shown in the Collingwood Gallery in Melbourne’s leading arts precinct from the 5th-18th August. Over 150 entries were received, and Mrs Yeomans’ artwork, Puzzling Light was one of 30 chosen for her relevance to the theme, and the strength of her creativity and execution. Run by Field, this wonderful annual exhibition promotes artists with and without disability, and even though Janelle does not have a disability herself, she felt very honoured to be chosen for this exhibition.
During the past six months, Janelle has been researching and experimenting with jigsaw puzzles to create sculpture. “I enjoy creating something unique and intriguing, so using discarded commercial jigsaw puzzles to create sculptural works is part of my art practice. The use of jigsaw puzzles is a reflection of my childhood memories and my adult hobbies, as well as my ‘waste not’ attitude.”
“I knew I wanted to create a sculpture that actually uses light as part of the work, so to use a jigsaw puzzle to make the form became an obvious choice.” The puzzle was chosen with specific criteria in mind, especially for its tendency to ‘crack’ in all the right places when shaped into a dome. With the addition of a light source as a medium, the puzzle creates an interesting pattern of light, which changes according to where the sculpture is placed in relation to the light source.
